Pond & Lake Weed-Algae Control

Pond & Lake Weed-Algae Control

Most of the time aquatic vegetation cannot be eradicated in the Austin, South Texas (TX) area, it is controlled. In order to control algae and nuisance aquatic vegetation, we develop an integrated approach for each client. This process starts with a visit to your pond or lake to assess the water quality, identify the invasive vegetation and identify unwanted sources of nutrients and other variables that affect the growth of aquatic plants.

Pond & Lake Algae Control

Algae problems often start very early in the season here in the San Marcos, Austin, Travis County, Texas (TX) area. If we can get it controlled before it starts growing actively, produces gas bubbles and floats to the surface, the costs can be greatly reduced. Algae can grow very fast and get very ugly. Fortunately, we have liquid and granular algaecides, beneficial bacteria/enzyme products, lake & pond fountains & aeration devices, pond muck and sediment reduction and removal tools. Effective algae reduction often takes multiple tools and an integrated approach.

Vegetation Control

Unwanted aquatic vegetation is one of the most troublesome pond problems here in the Austin, South Texas (TX) area. Control methods include: biological (fish that eat plants); chemical treatment (aquatic algaecides and herbicides), cultural (beneficial plantings) and mechanical (pulling, cutting and raking). Biological control is usually our recommended long-term solution. Sterile grass carp can be extremely effective but require time. Pond treatments may be quick but require care. The type of vegetation must be identified correctly. Treatments must be mixed and applied properly.

Often special equipment is necessary for effective chemical application. Improper use of treatment products may kill much fish. We are licensed applicators of aquatic herbicides and pesticides. New aquatic herbicides are available which are effective, relatively long-lasting and safe. We often spray nuisance aquatic vegetation for immediate control, apply a colorant to limit light penetration and a bacteria product to inhibit new growth, and then stock sterile grass carp for long-term control.

Herbicides & Applicants

Herbicides and other applicants work by targeting a specific component of the plant's makeup or biology, and either poisoning it or altering that specific function of the plant so that it can no longer survive. Most all herbicides can be boiled down into 2 groups: Contact or Systemic Herbicides.

Contact herbicides perform by poisoning the plant or creating a negative affecting environment within the makeup of that plant that prevents its survival. Contact herbicides work more quickly and require a direct contact applicant system between the plant and the herbicide. A surfactant can help by binding or making stick the herbicide directly to the plant itself or root systems. Systemic herbicides are chemicals that somehow alter the biological functions of the plant causing death. These types of chemicals mimic certain hormones, regulate the plant's growth or inhibit the enzyme production or bleach the chlorophyll of a plant, stopping photosynthesis.
